NWAAS will be having its February meeting on Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 6:30pm. I’ll be the scheduled speaker with a talk on how I breed my East African Peacock “type” cichlids. Hope we see a lot of you there for that talk. Everyone with an interest in aquariums and fish is welcome. We usually have door prizes, refreshments, a mini-auction, and lots of interaction with other local hobbyists.

Homemade Water Pump

I’ll be one of the speakers for the NWAAS January meeting on Saturday, January 14, 2012. This will be held at 6:30pm in the Rogers Police Department Community Room. I’ll be talking on making a water pump and vacuum pump out of PVC pipe and fittings. I’ve already made the vacuum pump, and will be making the water pump in the next few weeks, so I can get some pictures of the process. Come to the meeting if you’d like to explore this DIY project.

Running Around As If The World Is Ending

I finally found out what that means, at least as far as my chickens are concerned. I was in my office the other day, and suddenly heard just an awful commotion from the chickens – much more than usual. I looked out and could see them running all around while screeching at the top of their lungs. I went out on the deck to see what was happening, and a hawk was flying away. The chickens had finally all run into the coop, and they didn’t come out again for quite awhile. The coop is fully covered, so no one got hurt, except for the hawk getting embarrassed.

I decided that I’d like to have some T-shirts with my logo on them. I went to Vistaprint and had one made up (they were less expensive than anywhere else I found). I love it, but I can’t find anyone who offers them in “tall” sizes. I can’t be the only person in the world who doesn’t think it’s attractive to have your stomach sticking out from under the bottom of your T-shirt (then again, maybe I am). It’s a cool shirt even if it doesn’t fit like I would like it to.

American Flag Fish

Last May I wanted to try some of my tropical fish out in my ponds. I decided to try American Flag Fish because I hadn’t tried them before, and they are very attractive. I placed the fish in the pond in May, and didn’t see them all summer. I had removed the livebearers from another pond several weeks ago, and I was just looking in the pond where I had placed the Flag Fish last Spring when I saw 2 fry darting away. They were too small to catch using my minnow trap, so I had to wait until I could empty a 2L bottle so I could make my own trap. I’ve been pulling fish out of that tank ever since. I think I’m up to the mid-30′s so far, and will keep trying until it gets too cold. Amazing.

Killiefish

I wanted to try some killiefish just for a change of pace. I had ordered some Northobranchius eggs from Thailand several weeks ago. They were supposed to be ready this week, so I put the eggs in some pond water Saturday, and by Saturday afternoon, I had swimming fry. I waited till Sunday to remove the fry, and I probably should have done it as soon as I noticed the fry. Not as many were swimming Sunday as I saw Saturday. I put them in a 10 gallon tank, and haven’t seen them since. Hopefully that’s just because they can hide in the Riccia.

EBJD’s

I think Corey and I have finally gotten some EBJD’s to “selling” size. We’re going to pick up an EBJD male to go with one of our BG females, which should increase our yield of the EBJD’s.

I’ve watched a few episodes of the new show “Tanks”, and I’ll have to admit that I’m not impressed. It seems like Curly and Mo are making aquariums for people who have more money than sense. I don’t know why people don’t seem to have any imagination or vision on their own, but have to pay someone to tell them what they like. I guess I personally like a more natural look, too, and that’s probably coloring my judgement to some extent.

EIAA Presentation

Rogue Chicken

We occasionally let the chickens out to free-range. When we got back from Iowa last time, we let them out, but I mis-counted, and one of the chickens got left outside the coop. She decided she didn’t want to go back in, and stayed out for 12 nights. We’re surprised nothing got her, but last night Gail was able to coax her back into the coop. We both feel much better with her being in the coop when we’re out of town. I finally “butchered one of our roosters. I sure hope practice makes perfect, because it sure wasn’t a quality job. I’ll practice on the other rooster when we get back.
